Hygiene Promotion Assistant

TITLE:  Hygiene Promotion Assistant (South Sudan National Position – 02) TEAM/PROGRAMME:   Health/WASH LOCATION: Based in Akobo West/East Field Office GRADECONTRACT LENGTH: 12

CHILD SAFEGUARDING: (select only one)

Level:  the role holder will have contact with children and/or young people either frequently (e.g., once a week or more) or intensively (e.g., four days in one month or more or overnight) because they work in country programs; or are visiting country programs; or because they are responsible for implementing the police checking/vetting process staff.

 

ROLE PURPOSE: 

Under the supervision of the Hygiene Promotion Officer, the Hygiene and Sanitation Assistant will be responsible for ensuring high quality and timely delivery of all the WASH-related Hygiene Promotion (Software) will contribute to Save the Children South Sudan Strategic objective of improving WASH to beneficiaries’ community through improving access to safe water and sanitation, and impacting good behaviour change in hygiene practices in project area of Akobo 

To ensure the complementarity of WASH hardware and software components to address existing WASH needs in the targeted communities. The position will also support the WASH emergency preparedness and response activities in the project areas.

 

SCOPE OF ROLE:

Budget Responsibilities: None

Role Dimensions:  

  • Internal:  WASH Technical Specialist, Field Manager, BHA Program Manager, Hygiene Promotion Officer, Hygiene Promoters/CLTS Monitors, Finance, Logistics and HR   
  • External:  County-level units, Local and International NGOs and UN Agencies, NNGOs in the field locations

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

Programme Support:

 

  • Ensure that the hygiene promotion activities are implemented based on the WASH quality standards established by SCI and through  WASH Quality Benchmarks and checklist. 
  • Daily monitoring and recording of field activities related to WASH-Hygiene promotion and track the project planned activity progress daily. 
  • Weekly (or each time when necessary) brief written and oral reports to line manager.
  • Participate actively in terms of collecting required data to donors reports and proposals.
  • Assist the MEAL team in monitoring and evaluation and ensure project lessons are documented for future note.
  • Close cooperation with trained groups — regular meetings and sessions, monitoring of WASH activities after the training, documenting activities conducted by trained groups.
  • Work closely with school administration to School Hygiene Clubs, working with teachers and pupils, monitoring school activities and CLST- Pre-triggering and Post triggering and WASH’EM, PDM. 
  • Communicate techniques on environmental, food, water hygiene in the target households/ communities. Ensure that the various aspects of the hygiene activities are integrated with Gender, Protection and Health.
  • Cooperation with local authorities and local communities — participation in meetings, reporting from meetings to the Hygiene and Sanitation Officer.
  • Facilitating appropriate community involvement in the design and delivery of essential WASH services and facilities — carrying out community mobilization activities, liaising with crucial stakeholders.
  • Mobilise and conduct community hygiene and sanitation campaigns sessions, focus group discussion, and meeting with key informants 
  • Arranging and sorting WASH IEC materials and ensure proper usage — liaising with Logistics, informing Hygiene Promotion Officer about possible shortages.
  • Providing support/carrying out WASH-NFI distributions — organizing distribution according to Hygiene Promotion Officer's guidance & providing stock count for WASH NFIs, informing community about the rules during distribution as well as proper usage of items; handing over items to community; keeping record of recipients.
  • Attending field based WASH Cluster meetings upon request from Hygiene Promotion Officer 
  • As required, support WASH in emergencies (flood response, public health outbreak) planning and response interventions. 

 

Capacity Building:

  • Identify learning and training opportunities for community Health Volunteers and work as a mentor and role model for less coomunity volunteers 

 

Representation & Advocacy & Organisational Learning:

  • Ensure that Save the Children's work is coordinated with efforts of other agencies and Government, and take a leadership role within Interagency Coordination forums, ensuring the specific needs of children are being addressed.
  • Advocate that the minimum standards of humanitarian relief are maintained in accordance with the Sphere Charter and Red Cross Code of Conduct.

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Diploma Public Health,  Community Health, or sociology 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Essential:

  • Diploma in Public Health, Community Health or sociology
  • 2-3 years of experience in Hygiene Promotion Activities, supervising the implementation of WASH facilities-Sanitation facilities, Health facilities Waste Management Zones, 
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work with people from different backgrounds.
  • Experience in working with local communities, children, and people with special needs.
  • Experience in CLTS, PHAST, IEC, SBCC and CHAST methodology.
  • Experience in integration of WASH and other sectors (such as Health, Nutrition, Child Protection, Education, Food Security and Livelihoods and effective community engagement approaches.
  • Understands the mainstreaming of gender, disability inclusion and accountability to affected populations mechanisms in WASH programming.
  • Have good computer skills (Microsoft Office) internet, email, 
  • The capacity and willingness to be extremely flexible and accommodating in difficult working circumstances.
  • Commitment to the aims and principles of Save the Children. in particular a good understanding of the Save the Children mandate and child focus and an ability to ensure this continues to underpin our support.
  • Fluent level - written and spoken English and Nuer Language is advantage.
